My name is John Atkin I Live In Newcastle (England) with My wife Kerry and our 2 daughters Molly & Erin we are the proud owners of the AFC Newcastle. I first started training at the age of 13, myfirst passion was Ninjutsu. The MMA class is the longest running MMA ( Circa 1993) club in Newcastle, offering all aspects of mixed martial arts training.
The club is run by Chief Instructor Steven Beresford 4th Dan and is assisted by Sensei Carl Shovlin 1st Dan and Sensei Lee Haywood 1st Dan. We teach traditional Shotokan Karate but with elements fromother martial arts while we still respect, understand and use the underlying traditional Karate techniques. Our grading syllabus has been developed with the vision of challenging and developing all students on their Karate journey.

The Club Instructors are Sensei Jill F Kelly (6th Dan) and Sensei Trish Bruce(5th Dan). The senior club Instructor is Sensei Ian Willis (6th Dan) who is the full time Professional Instructor at the Ashington Shotokan Karate Club main dojo. The club was established in 1974.

Imi was born on May 26 1910 in Budapest and grew up in Bratislava. Through Imi's father, he had an unusual upbringing which shaped the person he was to become. His father was a chief inspector on theBratislava police force, the owner of a local gymnasium, a self-defence instructor and a former circus acrobat. With his father's encouragement, Imi become an award-winning athlete with expertise in a wide range of sports, including swimming, boxing, wrestling and gymnastics.

Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei) spent much of his life studying various martial and spiritual disciplines. This included Daito Ryu aiki Ju-jutsu as well as several classical weapon systems. These years oftraining culminated in the development of aikido. Morihei Ueshiba became dissatisfied with the conflictive nature of many martial arts and believed that in true budo, there should be no opponent or struggle.
